About The Position

The Plate Fitter position at Gulf Copper Ship Repair Inc. involves fabricating and fitting metal structural parts within the hull of ships. Requirements

• High School Diploma or one-year certificate from college or technical school preferred.
• 1st Class: 3-5 years of marine/industrial plate/structural fitting experience.
• 2nd Class: 1-3 years of marine/industrial plate/structural fitting experience.
• Ability to pass a hands-on test when applicable.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with marine or industrial environments.
• Familiarity with safety protocols and PPE usage.

Responsibilities

• Interpret blueprints and fabricate metal structural parts such as plates, bulkheads, and frames.
• Perform quality control checks to verify material compatibility with specifications.
• Lay out positions of parts on metal using blueprints or templates.
• Mark reference lines and position parts in the hull of the ship.
• Align parts using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.
• Mark locations for drilling holes and install temporary fasteners for welding or riveting.
• Install packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories like doors and hatches.
• Prepare molds and templates for nonstandard parts fabrication.
• Remove high spots and cut bevels using hand files and cutting torches.
• Tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
• Operate large machinery such as metal shears and brakes.
