About the position

The Play Zone (Child Watch) Staff at the YMCA of Greensboro is a part-time position dedicated to providing care for children ranging from infants to 12 years old. This role is essential in creating a safe, engaging, and nurturing environment for children while their parents participate in activities at the YMCA. Staff members are expected to uphold the Judeo-Christian principles central to the YMCA's mission, exemplifying the four pillars of character: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. The position requires a commitment to fostering relationships with children, ensuring their well-being, and providing comfort to parents. The Play Zone Staff will engage in various age-appropriate activities, including reading, board games, arts and crafts, and physical activities. Building rapport with the children is crucial, as it helps create a welcoming atmosphere that encourages participation. Additionally, staff members are responsible for maintaining a clean and safe environment by following specific cleaning procedures and adhering to branch-defined rules regarding diaper changes and assisting children with toileting. Communication with parents is also a key aspect of the role, particularly in situations where a child may be in distress. This position operates Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 12 PM, with year-round availability required. The pay for this role is set at $12 per hour. The Play Zone Staff will not have any supervisory responsibilities but will be expected to demonstrate leadership competencies such as inclusion, effective communication, critical thinking, and emotional maturity. The role requires a passion for working with children and a strong commitment to punctuality and reliability in attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Engage in age-appropriate activities with children in the Play Zone area, including reading, board games, arts & crafts, and physical activities.
  • Build relationships with children to provide comfort and confidence to parents regarding their child's well-being.
  • Maintain a clean, healthy, and safe environment by following branch-defined cleaning procedures.
  • Follow specific rules for changing diapers and assisting children with toileting.
  • Communicate effectively with parents regarding their children, especially in cases of distress.

Requirements

  • CPR Certification required upon hire.
  • No minimum education required, but the ability to read and interpret safety rules and procedure manuals is necessary.
  • Ability to write routine reports and communicate effectively with parents and children.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations such as addition and subtraction.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with children in a childcare or educational setting.
  • Knowledge of child development principles and practices.
