About the position

The position involves performing various plumbing and steamfitting tasks under the supervision of a Crew Supervisor or other designated supervisor within a state department, institution, or agency. The role encompasses installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing and steamfitting fixtures, fittings, and systems, along with related duties as required.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect broken water, drainage, waste, and gas lines, and other plumbing fixtures to ascertain the nature of needed repairs.
  • Cover piping and fittings with insulation or other materials.
  • Install toilets, showers, heating units, and other plumbing fixtures and maintain pumps.
  • Maintain water, drainage, waste, and gas lines in good working order and perform emergency repairs.
  • Remove stoppages from waste pipes and prevent water wastage by repairing or replacing worn parts.
  • Install and maintain mains, rises, headers, radiators, and auxiliary equipment for heating systems.
  • Install, repair, and maintain water, gas, oil, waste disposal, and high-pressure steam pipes and facilities.
  • Interpret data from stationary firemen's and/or engineer's logs.
  • Prepare and work from sketches, plans, specifications, and roughing-in sheets according to plumbing codes.
  • Inspect and test work in progress and completed work.
  • Keep simple records of work done, materials used, and time spent.

Requirements

  • Three years of broad experience in plumbing and steamfitting work.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license in New Jersey if vehicle operation is necessary for job duties.
  • Knowledge of plumbing and steamfitting installation, inspection, repair, and maintenance.
  • Ability to analyze plumbing problems and develop effective work methods.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with electronic and manual recording systems used by the agency.
  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language or Braille.
