About the position

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a skilled and experienced plumber to join the Hospital Maintenance team. This position is crucial for ensuring the proper functioning of plumbing systems throughout the healthcare facility. As a Hospital Maintenance Plumber, you will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems, adhering to the distinct requirements and standards of a healthcare environment. Your role will also involve providing excellent customer service while performing your duties. In this position, you will maintain and perform repairs, modifications, replacements, and installations of various water systems, including domestic hot and cold water systems, HVAC systems, waste removal systems, steam systems, and life safety systems. You will respond to maintenance requests from building occupants, ensuring compliance with plumbing codes and regulations. Record keeping is essential, as you will utilize an iPad to maintain accurate records of plumbing activities, including repairs, installations, and inspections in the maintenance software system. Collaboration with customers to understand specific plumbing needs and provide appropriate solutions is a key aspect of this role. You will work closely with other maintenance and management staff to address cross-functional issues and respond promptly to plumbing emergencies, ensuring patient and staff safety. Additionally, you will attend safety meetings and other required training sessions to stay updated on health and safety standards during all plumbing activities. Responsibilities

  • Maintains and performs repairs, modifications, replacements, and installations of domestic hot and cold water systems, including pumps, piping, valves, dietary equipment, restroom fixtures, filters, and water treatment equipment.
  • Services HVAC hot and chilled water components, including coils, boilers, hot and chilled water piping, and valves.
  • Manages waste removal systems, including grease traps, piping, sewage processing equipment, sanitary drain lines, traps, sewage ejectors, and bedpan washers.
  • Maintains and performs repairs, modifications, replacements, and installations of steam systems, including traps, piping, valves, heat exchangers, condensate return systems, flash tanks, boilers, and laundry equipment.
  • Services life safety systems and specialized medical and research equipment, including fire protection systems, medical gas lines, autoclaves, sterilizers, and vacuum systems.
  • Responds to maintenance and services requests from building occupants, including emergencies, maintenance problems, installations, modifications, repairs, and adjustments.
  • Ensures all work complies with plumbing codes and regulations.
  • Utilizes an iPad to maintain accurate records of plumbing activities, including repairs, installations, and inspections in the maintenance software system.
  • Collaborates with customers to understand specific plumbing needs and provide appropriate solutions.
  • Works closely with other maintenance and management staff to address cross-functional issues.
  • Responds promptly to plumbing emergencies and provides effective solutions to minimize downtime and ensure patient and staff safety.
  • Ensures compliance with health and safety standards during all plumbing activities.
  • Attends safety meetings and other required meetings and training.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited Technical School and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in plumbing maintenance with similar facilities required.
  • Currently licensed with a Journeyman Plumber Registration or Masters Plumbers License, issued by the State of Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board required.
  • Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business.
  • Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 6,000 hours of verifiable on-the-job training for the Plumber certification, or equivalent verifiable experience.

  • Fire pump and Backflow certification preferred.

Benefits

  • Hourly Pay Range: $20.80 - $30.00 (Commensurate with experience & qualifications), plus incentive opportunities for Master Plumbers and Medical Gas Licenses upon hire.
