About the position

The Plumbing/Piping Estimator at University Mechanical & Engineering Contractors (UMEC) is responsible for managing all phases of the estimating and bidding process for mechanical systems, including plumbing and HVAC. This role requires a thorough understanding of mechanical construction bidding processes and the ability to prepare large and complex bid proposals. The estimator will collaborate with various professionals, perform quantity take-offs, and ensure accurate pricing for materials and subcontractors. The position is based in Tempe, AZ, and involves limited remote work opportunities.

Responsibilities

• Produce mechanical estimates by analyzing proposals and requirements.
• Review and understand all project bid documents.
• Perform quantity take-off, material, equipment, and subcontractor pricing.
• Prepare proposals using Quick Pen estimating software.
• Collaborate with design firms and project teams on design-assist projects.
• Manage project mechanical designs to budget, ensuring compliance with safety and insurance requirements.
• Attend pre-bid meetings and understand the complete scope of work required.
• Visit construction project sites for job walks and meetings.

Requirements

• 3 to 6 years of Plumbing and Mechanical Piping Estimating experience.
• Proficiency in preparing large and complex bid proposals.
• Mechanical Engineering Degree or Construction Management Degree preferred.
• Thorough knowledge of mechanical construction bidding processes.
• Excellent communication skills with customers, vendors, and contractors.
• Ability to maintain organization while multitasking to meet deadlines.

Nice-to-haves

• Onsite field experience in plumbing and pipefitting.
• Familiarity with project management/document control software.
• Familiarity with construction/financial software packages.
