About the position

The Chief of Psychiatry at the VA Central Texas Health Care System in Temple, TX, is responsible for overseeing and improving mental health care services. This role involves planning, directing, and coordinating psychiatric services, ensuring compliance with healthcare standards, and providing clinical services to patients. The Chief will also participate in leadership meetings, manage staff, and contribute to process improvements within the Mental Health Service.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight of all psychiatric and medical care within the Mental Health Service.
  • Participate in Mental Health Service meetings and facility committees as a representative of the Mental Health Service.
  • Develop and implement operational policies and procedures for prescribing providers.
  • Manage and supervise staff assigned to the psychiatry section.
  • Monitor compliance with VA performance-based measures and address non-compliance effectively.
  • Complete proficiency reports, personnel actions, and recruitment tasks with support from the Mental Health Service Chief.
  • Ensure quality, safety, and value of psychiatric services through ongoing evaluations and medical records reviews.
  • Provide clinical services as a psychiatrist, including assessing, diagnosing, and treating mental health disorders.
  • Participate in the teaching and supervision of medical students and residents.
  • Perform other administrative and clinical duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine from an approved school.
  • Completed or currently completing residency training in an accredited core specialty program.
  • Currently hold a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a U.S. State or territory.
  • Board Certified in Psychiatry (preferred).
  • Minimum of 1 year clinical experience as a Supervisory Physician (preferred).
  • Recent outpatient/inpatient adult psychiatric healthcare experience (preferred).
  • Experience as a member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team (preferred).
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience providing mental health care through Telehealth modalities.
  • Skilled at multitasking and working under pressure.
