About the position

The Columbus Regional Airport Authority (CRAA) is seeking dedicated individuals for the position of Police Cadet. This is an entry-level position that offers a unique opportunity to begin a rewarding career in law enforcement. As a Police Cadet, you will be compensated while attending a police academy full-time, and upon successful completion of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certification, you will transition into a full-time Police Officer role. The starting pay for this position is $28.14 per hour, providing a solid foundation for your career in public safety. The CRAA Police Department is a full-service, CALEA accredited agency responsible for ensuring the safety and security of life and property at the Columbus Regional Airport Authority properties, including John Glenn International Airport, Rickenbacker International Airport, and Bolton Field. The mission of the Columbus Airport Police is to serve the public and the airport community, working in partnership to maintain a secure environment for all individuals who work, visit, or travel through these facilities. As a Police Cadet, you will undergo a rigorous selection process that includes a written exam, physical fitness assessment, panel interview, and various background checks. Your responsibilities will include attending and successfully completing the Ohio Police Officer Training Program, after which you will be expected to perform a range of duties as a Police Officer, such as responding to alarms, investigating unlawful acts, maintaining reports, conducting interviews, and ensuring the safety of airport properties. This role requires a commitment to public service and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and successfully complete the Ohio Police Officer Training Program as a paid employee.
  • Respond to overt and covert alarms at airport security checkpoints and throughout the terminals.
  • Investigate improper or unlawful acts, such as public disturbance, security breach, or assault.
  • Complete and maintain federal, state, local offense and informational reports, files, and records.
  • Conduct fact-finding and/or informational interviews.
  • Exercise authority to arrest in accordance with TSR: 49 CFR Part 1542 and the laws of the State of Ohio and City of Columbus.
  • Patrol terminal and airport property, recognizing/responding to potential security breaches.
  • Assist in the search for suspicious items/bombs in the event of threat.
  • Take vehicle accident reports on Airport property and perform traffic control responsibilities.
  • Provide special security for VIPs.
  • Respond to activated fire, burglary, or other alarms.
  • Perform related work as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • No prior experience required
  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Valid driver's license
  • At least 20 years of age at the time of application and 21 years of age at time of hire
  • Willingness and ability to successfully complete an annual physical agility test as outlined in the current Fraternal Order of Police Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Ability to pass a personal history investigation including driving record, criminal history background check, physical examination, drug screen, psychological evaluation, and polygraph or CVSA verification.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other emergency agencies, co-workers, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with others and possess a superior affirmative attitude and be a teamwork advocate.
  • Ability to work a varied shift, including weekends and holidays, and on occasion, in excess of the normal eight (8) hour tour of duty.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional during stressful situations.
