About the position

The Police Cadet position at the City of Sunland Park is an entry-level role designed for individuals who are being trained in general duty police work. The primary purpose of this position is to protect life and property through the enforcement of laws, while also engaging in community relations and assisting in various law enforcement activities. Cadets will undergo training and are expected to take an oath of office, performing duties under administrative supervision with some latitude for independent decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols an assigned area by car or on foot to prevent crime and maintain law and order.
  • Investigates citizen complaints and unusual conditions.
  • Makes preliminary investigations and examines roadways, traffic controls, and roadway hazards.
  • Enforces traffic regulations and investigates accidents, interviewing principals and witnesses, taking statements, and preparing accident reports.
  • Directs traffic at special events, during emergencies, or when traffic conditions warrant special control.
  • Makes arrests, guards prisoners, locates and questions suspects and witnesses, and takes statements.
  • Prepares reports on investigations, offenses, arrests, and activities.
  • Collects and identifies evidence and testifies in court.
  • Administers first aid to sick and injured persons.
  • Controls riots, disturbances, and other civil disorders.
  • Answers inquiries from the public and assists motorists, pedestrians, and other citizens.
  • Assists other law enforcement agencies and maintains efficiency in the use of weapons and tools.
  • Leads and assists lower-level officers in the performance of their duties.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Law Enforcement Academy Certified or certifiable through NMLEA within one year of hire.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (preferred).
  • Must possess a current valid driver license.
  • Must pass a comprehensive background investigation including fingerprints and arrest record check and polygraph test.
  • Must submit to and successfully complete psychological screening and evaluation.
  • Must pass a medical examination.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual in Spanish is preferred.
