About the position

The Police Communications Operator III is responsible for supervising and training employees in the UFPD Communications Center, ensuring efficient handling of calls for service, and maintaining communication links between field officers and emergency services. This role includes conducting briefings, evaluating performance, and managing complaints, while also serving as a Communications Training Officer and alternate Florida Crime Information Center Agency Coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all employees assigned to work in the UFPD Communications Center.
  • Train, advise, and counsel employees on their duties and responsibilities.
  • Conduct briefings prior to shift assignments to discuss new procedures and department orders.
  • Ensure all calls for service are handled quickly and professionally.
  • Serve as Communications Training Officer, training personnel in call taking and dispatching procedures.
  • Review and evaluate shift subordinates' work performance and schedules.
  • Process and resolve complaints from shift employees.
  • Exercise authority to take disciplinary actions as necessary.
  • Supervise the activation of emergency notifications.
  • Operate the UFPD Communications Center, providing radio communication support.
  • Maintain communication links between field officers and emergency services.
  • Perform duties associated with the FCIC/NCIC teletype and modify records in databases.
  • Receive and evaluate calls from the public for police assistance.
  • Input and transmit call information using dispatch systems.
  • Prepare departmental logs, reports, and forms in a timely manner.
  • Participate in interviewing job applicants and conducting training classes.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Three years of experience in a public safety communications center.
  • Three years of supervisory experience in a public safety communications center or equivalent education and experience.
  • Proficiency in typing (minimum 35 CWPM).
  • State certification on the NCIC/FCIC computer system required within six months of employment.
  • Florida Department of Health E911 Telecommunicator certification required.
