The Police Forensic Analyst I/II position at the San Jose Police Department focuses on supporting the Red-Light Running Enforcement Program. This role involves monitoring and reviewing video footage and photos from red-light cameras, preparing court documents, and assisting in criminal investigations. The position is temporary and is expected to last until June 30, 2025, with potential for extension based on funding and departmental needs.

  • Assists with monitoring the Red-Light Running program for the San Jose Police Department.
  • Reviews all video and photos of red-light cameras in San Jose.
  • Approves or rejects all noted violations.
  • Prepares subpoenas for court, including conducting a second investigation into completed citations.
  • Completes court work including submitting requested court packets and reviewing Trial by Declarations.
  • Acts on behalf of the department as Court Officer.
  • Notifies third-party Red-Light Camera company or City Attorney's Office regarding court cases needing additional representation.
  • Checks for and investigates any paid citations with nominations attached.
  • Assists patrol officers or detectives in criminal investigations that require searching and using stored camera footage.
  • Meets and interacts with third-party Red-Light Camera company technician for random audit and review of intersection equipment.
  • Works with Department of Transportation and/or third-party Red-Light Camera company to maintain red-light cameras in working condition.
  • Conducts research and maintains compliance of regulations, legislation, and law pertinent to automated red light enforcement.
  • Gathers, organizes, and evaluates data including video and/or case files and records; maintains evidence in an electronic case management system.
  • Creates and maintains unit logs/rosters for tracking assignments and requests used for statistical or quarterly management reports.
  • Collaborates and maintains working relationships with various department and city-wide personnel, as well as with outside partner agencies and professional organizations.
  • May testify in court as a witness or expert.
  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Public Administration, Business Administration, Information Management, Criminal Justice, or closely related field.
  • For Police Forensic Analyst II: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible professional forensic analytic or investigation experience, including conducting studies, organizing and analyzing data, and preparing reports and recommendations or conclusions.
  • Possession of a valid State of California Driver's License.
  • Ability to successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation including a polygraph.
  • Previous law enforcement or traffic enforcement investigative experience.
  • Basic knowledge of the California Vehicle Code.
  • Competitive hourly wage ranging from $42.77 to $56.72 depending on experience and qualifications.
