About the position

The Police Licensed Mental Health Counselor provides mental health services as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) to enhance the mental health and well-being of police personnel, their families, and the community through individual and group support services, consultation, early intervention initiatives, training and education while promoting a culture of overall mental health wellness within the department. The role involves performing directly related work as required.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the establishment of a Mental Health & Wellness Office within the Manchester Police Department.
  • Aids in decreasing the stigma, improving awareness, and assisting the department to adopt early intervention mechanisms to improve the overall mental health and wellness of Department personnel and the community.
  • Oversees individual peer support.
  • Oversees group Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) debriefing.
  • Provides education and training related to suicide awareness and prevention.
  • Provides post-shooting trauma intervention and support services.
  • Provides substance misuse counseling, education and training.
  • Provides military deployment preparation, support and reintegration services.
  • Delivers employee and family support group facilitation.
  • Provides family preparedness training and support.
  • Coordinates and delivers annual mental health and wellness consultations for all employees.
  • Provides CISM team consultation.
  • Provides Critical Incident Team (CIT) consultation.
  • Provides Police Community Programs Manager consultation.
  • Provides Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team consultation.
  • Provides Crisis Negotiator Unit (CNU) consultation.
  • Provides Crisis Response Unit (CRU) consultation.
  • Provides Adverse Childhood Experiences Response Team (ACERT) consultation.
  • Provides Juvenile Division, Domestic Violence Unit, Cyber Crime Unit, Violent Crime Unit, undercover, SWAT and other special assignment consultation.
  • Provides Individual and departmental mental health and wellness training.
  • Provides CISM Team mental health training.
  • Provides SWAT mental health training.
  • Provides CNU mental health training.
  • Provides Juvenile Division, Domestic Violence Unit, Cyber Crime Unit, Violent Crime Unit, undercover, SWAT and other special mental health training.
  • Offers consultation and training to specialized units and teams, while promoting a department-wide culture of wellness.
  • Assesses, screens, diagnoses and treats mental health conditions of Police Department personnel.
  • Provides crisis management and intervention assistance during traumatic events.
  • Provides individual and group therapy sessions, education and CIT and SUD programs for Department personnel.
  • Acts as the liaison for employees in conjunction with the Police Department Mental Health & Wellness Coordinator for the City EAP Provider.
  • Develops proactive/preventative mental health treatment and education programs to provide early intervention, psychoeducation, stress management and behavioral coping skills.
  • Addresses possible risk factors early on, promotes resilience through education and training.
  • Promotes a healthy and positive mental health culture through mental health awareness and initiatives within the Police Department.
  • Serves on boards and commissions relating to mental health programs and practices.

Requirements

  • Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) certification.
  • Experience in providing mental health services, particularly in a law enforcement or community setting.
  • Strong understanding of mental health issues and interventions.
  • Ability to conduct training and educational programs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
