About The Position

The Police Lieutenant position is a promotional role within the New Castle County Police Department, responsible for overseeing police units and ensuring effective law enforcement operations. This role involves significant administrative and supervisory duties, including training, discipline, and performance evaluation of officers. The Lieutenant will exercise considerable judgment in decision-making and will report to a Police Captain or other superior officers.

Requirements

• At least five (5) years' experience as a New Castle County Police Officer.
• At least one (1) year experience in a supervisory capacity at the rank of Police Sergeant.
• Currently serving at the rank of Police Sergeant.
• Completion of some college courses or advanced police training courses.

Nice To Haves

• Knowledge of the geography of the County.
• Some knowledge of the behavior of criminals and the causes underlying criminality.

Responsibilities

• Command police units and ensure sufficient personnel are assigned at all times.
• Plan and supervise police activities in the County with specific responsibility for training and discipline.
• Investigate complaints and disciplinary problems.
• Analyze and evaluate the performance of shifts and individual officers.
• Keep records and make reports of activities.
• Stay updated on professional developments in police supervision and work.
• Assign officers to posts and review the work of subordinates and supervisors.
• Receive and review reports of subordinates and prepare and submit reports to superiors.
• Testify in court as required.
• Promote an ongoing attitude of dedication to excellent public service.
