About the position

The Police Officer 1 position at the Ohio Department of Public Safety involves assisting state highway patrol officers in maintaining public safety, enforcing laws, and responding to emergencies. This role requires candidates to be part of a pool for future openings and may involve attending a 26-week training program if not already OPOTA certified. The position includes a variety of responsibilities such as patrolling, monitoring traffic, assisting in investigations, and performing administrative duties related to police work.

Responsibilities

  • Assist state highway patrol officers in patrolling grounds and buildings on foot and in car.
  • Monitor traffic conditions and parking facilities to ensure efficient flow of traffic.
  • Check parking permits and issue traffic tickets as necessary.
  • Assist other police officers in apprehending, arresting, and processing criminal violators.
  • File affidavits and serve warrants and subpoenas.
  • Appear in court and testify in criminal proceedings as required.
  • Assist in conducting investigations of criminal or administrative nature and crash accidents.
  • Perform routine administrative duties related to police work, including keeping logs and writing reports.
  • Respond to emergencies and make emergency runs in patrol car during special events.
  • Escort, protect, and assist visitors as needed.

Requirements

  • Formal education in arithmetic including fractions, decimals, and percentages, and in reading and writing English vocabulary.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Possession of a certificate having successfully completed an approved basic peace officer training program or completion of 20 years active duty as a peace officer.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in law enforcement or public safety roles.
  • Ability to perform under pressure in emergency situations.
