About the position

The Police Officer position involves performing a variety of law enforcement duties under general supervision, aimed at protecting public health, safety, and welfare. Officers are responsible for enforcing laws, conducting investigations, and engaging with the community to prevent crime and maintain order. This role requires a commitment to public service and the ability to respond effectively to emergencies and various situations that arise in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned areas by car, bicycle, or on foot; perform crime suppression and prevention activities.
  • Answer special calls; conduct initial and follow-up investigations; interview victims, complainants, and witnesses.
  • Enforce traffic laws; perform crowd control; operate radar devices; control and direct traffic when necessary.
  • Assist in crime prevention activities and control juvenile delinquency; serve search warrants and subpoenas.
  • Administer CPR and first aid in emergencies; issue citations and make arrests; transport and care for detained persons.
  • Conduct detailed investigations of crimes against persons and property; collect, preserve, and process evidence.
  • Prepare required reports and maintain investigative records; testify in court regarding prosecution of offenders.
  • Train and assist less experienced personnel; may serve as a Field Training Officer or officer in charge.
  • Respond to and resolve animal control issues; establish positive working relationships with community organizations and the public.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; prior experience in law enforcement and an associate's degree are desirable.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license and certificate of completion of a Basic Police Academy certified by California P.O.S.T.
  • Knowledge of operations and standard procedures of a Police Department; principles of crime prevention and suppression.
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and evaluate facts and evidence; work under pressure and act quickly in emergencies.
  • Skill to safely and effectively operate law enforcement equipment, firearms, and a police vehicle.

Nice-to-haves

  • Spanish fluency is desired.
