About the position

The City of Highland Park is seeking a dedicated and community-focused Police Officer (Lateral Entry) to join its highly regarded police department. This role emphasizes community policing and aims to build strong relationships with both the community and fellow officers. The position offers various specialty opportunities and is committed to safeguarding persons and property while promoting public trust and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Handle complaints filed by citizens and investigate violations of laws and ordinances.
  • Conduct interviews and interrogations of victims, witnesses, suspects, and offenders.
  • Document details of violations and prepare clear, accurate reports.
  • Patrol assigned areas to watch for criminal activity and safety hazards.
  • Conduct security inspections and take corrective actions for identified security issues.
  • Engage in proactive traffic and parking enforcement, including DUI apprehension.
  • Investigate traffic accidents and prepare complete reports/diagrams.
  • Respond to domestic disputes and other interpersonal conflicts.
  • Provide assistance to other emergency service providers as needed.
  • Interact with community members to promote public trust and facilitate positive relationships.

Requirements

  • Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have successfully completed 60 semester hours credit or more from an accredited college or university.
  • Must be a United States citizen at the time of application.
  • Must possess a valid state of Illinois driver's license.
  • Must be certified or have the ability to be certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in community policing initiatives.
  • Proficiency in additional languages.
  • Previous law enforcement experience in a similar role.
