About the position

The Police Officer at John Carroll University (JCU) plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of the university community. This position requires independent decision-making and interaction with various constituents, both internal and external, to uphold the law and provide essential services. The officer will respond to emergencies, conduct investigations, and engage in proactive community policing, all while adhering to the university's mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • Uphold and enforce laws and ordinances of the United States, the State of Ohio, and the City of University Heights, along with university policies.
  • Respond to emergencies including criminal, medical, fire, and other incidents affecting the JCU community.
  • Investigate crimes and student conduct violations in an equitable and non-judgmental manner.
  • Produce clear, concise, complete, and correct reports.
  • Conduct proactive campus patrols using a community policing approach.
  • Address suspicious activity safely and without bias.
  • Ensure the physical security of JCU property and identify potential hazards.
  • Support campus activities with event security, parking, and transportation.
  • Enforce campus parking and traffic rules.
  • Oversee the operation of gate attendant, shuttle, and JCUMES functions.
  • Provide community services such as lost and found, room lockouts, and vehicle assistance.
  • Assist with CCTV and alarm monitoring as needed.

Requirements

  • Current, valid certification by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Council as a sworn peace officer.
  • Legally qualified to own and carry a firearm in the State of Ohio.
  • No convictions for crimes of violence or offenses involving physical force against covered persons.
  • Possess a valid Ohio driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Ability to pass an extensive background investigation, drug screen, and psychological testing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and effective written and oral communication.
  • Excellent customer service skills with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse, multi-cultural university environment.
  • Demonstrated firearms proficiency through annual requalification and training.
  • Ability to cope with and diffuse situations involving difficult individuals.

Nice-to-haves

  • Work experience as a police officer.
  • Experience in decision-making, problem resolution, and de-escalation of difficult situations.
  • An Associate degree or college-level coursework.
