About the position

The Iowa State Fair is seeking a Full-Time Police Officer to join its team, responsible for maintaining safety and enforcing laws on the fairgrounds. The position involves working a 12-hour Panama Shift schedule, primarily from 4:00 PM to 4:00 AM, and requires a commitment to public service and community engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce state and federal regulations, codes, laws, and administrative rules on the Iowa State Fairgrounds and properties.
  • Respond to calls for service, including complaints and emergency situations.
  • Conduct uniformed preventative patrols, 24/7.
  • Investigate crimes (e.g., major crimes, traffic violations, theft, domestic disputes, intoxication, security alarms) and complete reports.
  • Prepare supplementary reports for investigations.
  • Arrest and process individuals, including searching and seizing property, evidence collection, and transportation of offenders.
  • Identify and correct safety hazards around roadways, conduct crash analysis, investigate accidents, assist motorists, and manage traffic flow.
  • Collaborate with citizens and community groups, including referrals to agencies, welfare checks, and crime prevention education.
  • Assist during emergency situations, including fire, EMS, and severe weather response.
  • Inspect and maintain law enforcement vehicles and equipment.
  • Supervise specialized police operations during major events, such as the Iowa State Fair, World Pork Expo, and Good Guys Car Show.
  • Be available for mandatory overtime during major events.
  • Work collaboratively with other law enforcement agencies for offender apprehension, investigations, and major event coordination.
  • Perform security checks on buildings, grounds, and other Iowa State Fair properties.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be ILEA certified.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in law enforcement.
  • High School diploma or equivalent; preference for candidates with a two-year community college or vocational school degree, or four-year college degree in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, criminal administration, public administration, or related field.
  • Previous law enforcement experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Supervisory experience is preferred, but not required.
