About the position

The Police Property/Evidence Manager is a non-sworn position within the Police Department responsible for managing the property and evidence functions. This role involves maintaining the integrity of evidence, ensuring proper documentation, and overseeing the storage and release of property. The manager must exercise discretion and confidentiality while performing various administrative duties related to evidence handling and compliance with legal standards.

Responsibilities

• Receive, document, categorize, review, and verify property and evidence, maintaining a complete chain of custody.
• Process requests for confidential and evidentiary documents and maintain documentation of chain of custody.
• Conduct research on case status to determine if evidence can be released or destroyed, following policies and laws.
• Assist in maintaining records regarding the receipt, storage, release, and destruction of property and evidence.
• Conduct audits of property and evidence, verifying amounts and locations.
• Maintain legal custody and control of the property and evidence room, requisitioning materials as necessary.
• Testify in court regarding the handling and condition of evidence.
• Assist staff in the collection and processing of property and evidence from crime scenes.

Requirements

• Completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
• Experience relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with one to two years in a similar role.
• Possession of or ability to obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of South Dakota.

Nice-to-haves

• Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, municipal ordinances, rules, regulations, and procedures.
• Familiarity with computer databases and spreadsheet programs.
• General knowledge of evidence collection and handling principles.
