About the position

The Police Reserve Officer I position is a part-time role within the Police Department, specifically under the Auxiliary/Part Time Program. This role is designed to support a wide variety of police and law enforcement activities under the general supervision of a Reserve Sergeant or other designated departmental official. The primary focus of this position is service-oriented, which includes dispensing information, arbitrating disputes, providing assistance through referrals, property protection, crime prevention, and other public safety services. The duties associated with this role involve a significant element of personal danger and exposure to adverse weather conditions. Responsibilities include apprehending criminals, directing traffic, and transporting prisoners, all while adhering to Florida State Statutes and established departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines. Incumbents in this role must be capable of acting independently without close supervision and must exercise sound judgment in various situations. The position may involve assignments to specific functional areas such as the Special Services Division, Patrol Division, or Criminal Investigation Division, depending on the needs of the department and the training received by the officer. The role requires a commitment to maintaining public safety and order, and officers are expected to engage with the community to foster open communication and trust. The position is safety-sensitive and requires candidates to undergo a drug screening process. The examination process for candidates includes an oral board interview, a medical examination, a polygraph and psychological test, and a thorough background and fingerprint check. Candidates must meet specific qualifications, including being a U.S. citizen, having a valid Florida driver's license, and possessing a current valid Florida Law Enforcement Certification. The role is critical in ensuring the safety and security of the community, and officers are expected to perform their duties with professionalism and integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine preventive patrol in designated residential and business areas.
  • Respond to calls for police service and take action upon observing circumstances requiring police attention.
  • Provide information and assistance to the public by answering non-police related service calls and informing citizens of available services.
  • Maintain peace and safety by quelling public disturbances and ensuring civil obedience at group functions.
  • Ensure safe and convenient flow of traffic and pedestrians, enforce traffic violations, and report unsafe road conditions.
  • Enforce laws and arrest lawbreakers for felonies and misdemeanors, issue Notices to Appear, and prepare required documentation.
  • Testify in civil and criminal court proceedings and give depositions.
  • Function in a primary functional area such as Special Services Division, Patrol Division, or Criminal Investigation Division when properly trained.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen between 19 and 65 years old.
  • High School Diploma, GED, or acceptable equivalency diploma required.
  • Corrected visual acuity of at least 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other.
  • Must have a valid Florida driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Possess a current valid Florida Law Enforcement Certification or completion of Minimum Standards set by the Florida Police Standards Council.
  • No felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving perjury, false statement, domestic violence, or crimes involving moral turpitude.
