About the position

The Police Sergeant at Harvard University Police Department serves as a first-line supervisor responsible for overseeing patrol officers and ensuring compliance with departmental standards. This role involves responding to emergencies, mentoring staff, conducting training, and maintaining community relations. The Sergeant acts as a role model and leader, guiding officers in their duties and ensuring adherence to policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the activities of patrol officers as a Field Sergeant.
  • Respond to calls for service and emergencies.
  • Enforce Harvard University and HUPD policies.
  • Act as shift Watch Commander in the absence of a lieutenant.
  • Inspect and brief assigned personnel.
  • Conduct in-service training for officers.
  • Mentor, counsel, and commend subordinate staff as required.
  • Evaluate and document the job performance of assigned personnel.
  • Prepare records and reports related to police activities.
  • Review documentation for accuracy and compliance with laws and policies.

Requirements

  • College education (BA or BS) or equivalent experience in law enforcement practices and techniques.
  • Five or more years of law enforcement experience.
  • Ability to work any shift or day of the week as needed.
  • At least one year of experience directly related to the specified duties.

Nice-to-haves

  • Verified Patrol Training Officer (PTO) or detective experience at HUPD.
  • Experience in law enforcement at a municipal police department, sheriff's department, or federal agency.
  • BA or BS in organizational leadership, criminal justice, or management.
  • Documented experience and training in investigations, police operations, and tactics.
  • Successful completion of a recognized investigation, leadership, or management program.
