About the position

The Police Social Worker (PSW) at Northeast DuPage Family and Youth Services (NEDFYS) is responsible for providing social service assistance to community members in crisis. This role involves acting as a liaison between citizens and various resources, offering crisis intervention, conflict resolution, short-term counseling, and community outreach. The PSW collaborates closely with law enforcement to address non-crime related issues such as mental health, domestic violence, and substance use, while also implementing youth violence prevention programs.

Responsibilities

  • Independently follow up on referrals from police officers, local schools, hospitals, and the general public.
  • Assess client needs for referral to social and mental health agencies, emergency shelters, and financial assistance.
  • Provide short-term individual and family counseling in situations involving domestic disputes, substance abuse, and mental health issues.
  • Coordinate care with other social service providers, including local schools and mental health facilities.
  • Maintain case management records and confidential case files.
  • Provide professional consultation to officers on difficult cases.
  • Design and implement training for officers or partnering agencies.
  • Determine best course of action and provide crisis intervention services in emergency situations.
  • Conduct home visits with local law enforcement personnel to follow up on mental health and crisis situations.
  • Provide walk-in services to community residents during designated office hours.
  • Conduct suicide and mental health assessments.
  • Complete all required client documentation and maintain electronic health records.
  • Develop and implement positive youth development and violence prevention activities for middle and high-school aged youth.
  • Support and facilitate psychoeducational and skill-building groups as assigned.
  • Collect data for grant-related program reports and provide reports to outside sources as needed.
  • Adhere to agency policy on confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Participate in agency staff trainings and attend weekly supervision meetings.

Requirements

  • Master's degree and initial licensure (LSW, LPC) maintained for the duration of employment.
  • Preferred 2+ years of experience working with high-risk adolescents and families.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to partner effectively and work cooperatively with law enforcement personnel.
  • Flexible, organized, and resourceful.
  • Able to work well independently at times.
  • Some knowledge of trauma treatment modalities is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation with required auto insurance in effect.
