About the position

The Sleep Technician or Polysomnographer is responsible for performing routine and complex procedures to gather data for diagnosing clinical disorders of the nervous system. This role involves operating specialized equipment to record brain waves and sensory responses, analyzing waveforms, and preparing patients for various tests. The position requires strong communication skills and adherence to professional standards, ensuring patient confidentiality and compliance with health regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Operates electroencephalograph and evoked potential equipment to record patient's brain waves and nervous system response.
  • Analyzes waveforms during testing to detect evidence of brain disorders and sensory dysfunction.
  • Plots and labels graphs with identifying information; scores overnight polysomnograms; reviews EEG records.
  • Interviews patients to obtain required medical information and explains procedures to elicit cooperation.
  • Prepares patients for tests by measuring and marking cranial areas and fastening electrodes to specified positions.
  • Records medical history, medications used, test results, and identification information on patient's medical records.
  • Participates in the collection of normative data designed to refine the database of existing procedures.
  • Assists in the cross-training of clinical neurophysiology laboratory personnel and students.
  • Cleans, adjusts, and performs routine maintenance and repair on electroencephalograph and evoked potential equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment; reorders as required.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in a biological or physiological sciences program or equivalent experience.
  • National Board Registration in EEG, Evoked Potential, or Polysomnography is preferred.
  • Current CPR certification if applicable.
  • Ability to understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements.
  • Strong communication skills and proficiency in the English language.
  • Computer proficiency is required.
