About the position

The Food Service Operator position is a full-time role within the Food and Nutrition Services department, primarily focused on preparing and serving nutritious meals to students and staff. This role is essential in ensuring that all food safety protocols are adhered to and that food preparation guidelines are strictly followed. The Food Service Operator will be responsible for a variety of tasks that contribute to the overall efficiency and quality of the food service operation. In this position, the operator will prepare meals according to established recipes, ensuring that the meals are not only nutritious but also appealing to the students. This includes measuring ingredients accurately and following nutritional guidelines during meal preparation and serving. The operator will also be tasked with maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen and serving areas, which involves sweeping, mopping, and cleaning various kitchen equipment and surfaces. Additionally, the Food Service Operator will manage food storage, ensuring that leftover items are stored safely and that beverage coolers are adequately stocked. Monitoring food temperatures is crucial to ensure safety standards are met. The role also includes operating a cash register during meal times, handling cash transactions, and maintaining accurate inventory records. The operator will participate in staff development programs and is expected to maintain a clean and professional appearance while demonstrating good hygiene practices. Knowledge of Safe Serve and HACCP policies is essential for this role, as is the ability to communicate effectively with students and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare quality and nutritious meals following recipes and measuring proper quantities of food ingredients.
  • Serve meals to students in a friendly manner while adhering to nutritional guidelines.
  • Sweep, mop, and clean kitchens as directed; clean serving lines and wash dishes.
  • Operate and clean kitchen equipment as trained.
  • Store leftover food items following proper safety guidelines.
  • Ensure beverage coolers are stocked as needed.
  • Check temperatures of stored and served food to ensure food safety.
  • Operate cash register during scheduled meal times; count money and make deposits.
  • Assess and record inventory; submit food orders as needed.
  • Assist with daily food production records.
  • Dispose of trash and recyclables as needed.
  • Provide quality customer service.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school/GED.
  • Ability to communicate and relate effectively to others orally and in writing.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to operate commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to measure and calculate quantities for cooking.
  • Knowledge of Safe Serve guidelines and HACCP policies.
  • Knowledge of state and federal food services policies.
