About the position

The Port Engineer plays a crucial role in supporting the engineering department's goals and ensuring safe and efficient operations of vessels. This position involves overseeing maintenance, repairs, and compliance with regulatory standards while collaborating with various stakeholders, including company executives and external consultants.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct annual maintenance/repair and capital budget preparation for vessels
  • Conduct crew training to maintain regulatory compliance
  • Determine method, length, and costs of necessary vessel repairs
  • Direct the review and approval of area routine machinery purchases and requisitions
  • Lead or assist in developing and updating vessel maintenance programs
  • Evaluate and survey damage for insurance claims
  • Evaluate and take corrective action for emergency repairs
  • Assist with drydocking projects and maintain project documentation
  • Monitor engineering work in progress and planned maintenance
  • Prepare for inspections by regulatory groups and remedy deficiencies
  • Promote and oversee safe work practices with employees and vendors
  • Provide input to the daily tug maintenance and repair schedule
  • Stand on-call duty rotation for the department
  • Supervise emergency repairs to vessels
  • Train tug engineers regarding vessel systems and compliance

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in marine engineering or a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in the maritime industry
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience in maritime operations
  • Ability to manage marine personnel in various environmental conditions
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively
  • Familiarity with shipyards, tugs, and barges
  • Knowledge of marine labor contracts and general maritime law
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and NS5
  • Skilled at estimating and job cost management
  • Thorough understanding of vessel operations and equipment capabilities
