About the position

The Portfolio Manager will spearhead select grantmaking efforts, contribute to the development of the Foundation's Jewish Life and Israel strategy, and build the Foundation's public presence. This role is pivotal in ensuring that the Foundation's mission is effectively translated into actionable strategies and impactful grantmaking. The Portfolio Manager will work on various strategic projects outside the Jewish Life and Israel portfolio as needed, showcasing versatility and a broad understanding of the Foundation's goals. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Jewish Life and Israel, the Portfolio Manager will play a crucial role in shaping the Foundation's initiatives and ensuring alignment with its mission. In this position, the Portfolio Manager will be responsible for identifying prospective grantee organizations that align with the Foundation's mission and strategy. This includes independently managing all aspects of moving a potential grantee through the Foundation's due diligence process. The Portfolio Manager will accurately assess the strength of an organization's leadership, strategic plan, financial condition, demonstrated efficacy, and potential for impact. Additionally, they will lead strategic planning sessions that may focus on issues such as theory of change, model codification, strategic priority identification, and future growth. The role also involves performing quantitative and qualitative analyses, which may include benchmarking, financial modeling, and competitive assessment. The Portfolio Manager will develop or refine strategic, business, and implementation plans in partnership with the organization, determining whether a grant should be pursued and outlining the elements of the grant design, including outcome targets and key implementation milestones. They will produce materials for trustee review, present proposed grants to trustees, and prepare grantees for their presentations. Maintaining close, positive relationships with grantees is essential, as the Portfolio Manager will demonstrate a commitment to their success by problem-solving, offering ongoing advice, and eliminating barriers to their success. They will track grantee progress through site visits, data collection, and third-party evaluation, keeping the Director and President informed and seeking assistance as needed to ensure grantee success. In terms of strategy leadership, the Portfolio Manager will develop and maintain a breadth of knowledge about existing research and current trends, contributing a unique perspective to the Portfolio Team. They will use research and robust data analysis to inform ongoing refinement of strategy for the Jewish Life and Israel portfolio, collaborating with the team. Participation in internal strategy development on major sub-areas within the portfolio is expected, along with contributing to strategic thinking across the full portfolio. The Portfolio Manager will also nurture and access a robust network of operators, leaders, academics, and philanthropists in the nonprofit space to inform strategy and identify high-caliber emerging organizations. Representing the One8 Foundation at meetings, conferences, and other events will be a key aspect of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Identify prospect grantee organizations that align with the foundation's mission and strategy

Requirements

  • Proven experience in grantmaking or portfolio management within the nonprofit sector
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to perform quantitative and qualitative analyses
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with grantees and stakeholders
  • Experience in strategic planning and implementation
  • Knowledge of Jewish Life and Israel-related issues is preferred
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
