About the position

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a Post Doc Research Associate specializing in Materials Science to join our multi-disciplinary team focused on energy storage research. This position will primarily involve investigating cutting-edge technologies in high energy density lithium-sulfur batteries. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development of liquid electrolytes with appropriate solvation structures using new solvents, salts, and additives. Additionally, the role includes the development of lithium metal anodes featuring a 3D structure and proper protection membranes to enable stable cycling of lithium-sulfur batteries. The candidate will also engage in the characterization of electrochemical and morphological properties, as well as the investigation of electrode/electrolyte interphases. Responsibilities extend to preparing manuscripts for publication, presenting research findings at national and international conferences, and developing innovative ideas for funded research projects. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to significant advancements in energy storage technologies and to work alongside renowned researchers in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop liquid electrolytes with appropriate solvation structures using new solvents, salts, and additives.
  • Develop lithium metal anodes with 3D structure and proper protection membranes for stable cycling of lithium-sulfur batteries.
  • Characterize electrochemical and morphological properties of materials.
  • Investigate electrode/electrolyte interphases.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.
  • Present research work internally and externally at national/international conferences.
  • Develop new ideas for funded research projects.

Requirements

  • PhD in Organic Chemistry, Polymeric Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related fields within the past five years from an accredited college or university.
  • Demonstrated record of publishing in first-class journals.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong background in fundamental materials synthesis for advanced cathode and anode materials for battery applications.
  • Knowledge and experience with the development of non-aqueous electrolytes, lithium metal protection, and sulfur electrodes.
  • Extensive knowledge and hands-on skills in material synthesis and scale-up, battery assembly, and testing.
  • Prior experience with organic electrolytes and lithium-sulfur is preferred.
