About the position

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a Post Doc Research Associate in Materials Science to join our multi-disciplinary team focused on energy storage research. This position is centered around the development of high energy density lithium-sulfur batteries, a cutting-edge technology that has the potential to revolutionize energy storage solutions. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development of liquid electrolytes, utilizing new solvents, salts, and additives to create an appropriate solvation structure. Additionally, the role involves the development of lithium metal anodes featuring a 3D structure and protective membranes to enable stable cycling of lithium-sulfur batteries. In this role, the candidate will also engage in the characterization of electrochemical and morphological properties, as well as the investigation of electrode/electrolyte interphases. The successful candidate will be expected to prepare manuscripts for publication and present research findings at national and international conferences. Responsibilities

  • Develop liquid electrolytes with appropriate solvation structure using new solvents, salts, and additives.
  • Develop lithium metal anodes with 3D structure and proper protection membrane for stable cycling of lithium-sulfur batteries.
  • Characterize electrochemical and morphological properties of materials.
  • Investigate electrode/electrolyte interphases.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication and present research work at national/international conferences.
  • Develop new ideas for funded research.

Requirements

  • PhD in Organic Chemistry, Polymeric Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related fields within the past five years from an accredited college or university.
  • Demonstrated record of publishing in first-class journals.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong background in fundamental materials synthesis for advanced cathode and anode materials for battery applications.
  • Knowledge and experience with development of non-aqueous electrolytes, lithium metal protection, and sulfur electrodes.
  • Extensive knowledge and hands-on skills in material synthesis and scale-up, battery assembly, and testing.
  • Prior experience with organic electrolytes and lithium-sulfur is preferred.
