About the position

The position is responsible for processing mail and packages at Skidmore College, ensuring accurate record-keeping and familiarity with postal equipment. The individual will interact with students and employees in a friendly and professional manner while performing specialized duties. The role includes processing incoming and outgoing mail, picking up, sorting, and delivering mail/packages, and assigning mailboxes for faculty, staff, and students. The employee will ensure that outgoing mail conforms to United States Post Office rates and requirements, greet customers, maintain facilities, check IDs, and sell postage as assigned, completing sales on a POS system. Additionally, the employee will operate computerized, electronic, and automated mailing equipment, certify and insure College mail where required, and maintain a package area for faculty, staff, and students. The role also involves distributing flyers, operating post office vehicles, logging mail volumes and meter readings, and maintaining a uniform and safety shoes as per the Union contract. The employee is expected to maintain a high level of customer service and an interest in learning new ideas.

Responsibilities

  • Process incoming, outgoing and College mail and packages, including forwarding of mail
  • Pick up, sort and deliver mail/packages as required
  • Assign mail boxes for faculty, staff and students as required
  • Ensure outgoing mail conforms to United States Post Office rates and requirements
  • Greet customers, maintain facilities, check ID's and sell postage as assigned, complete sales on POS system
  • Operate computerized, electronic, and automated mailing equipment
  • Certify and insure College mail where required
  • Maintain a faculty, staff, student package area
  • Distribute flyers as indicated on job tickets
  • Operate post office vehicles as assigned and maintain gas/mileage record log as assigned
  • Log and capture mail volumes and meter readings
  • Wear uniform and safety shoes per Union contract
  • Maintain an interest in learning new ideas
  • Ability to speak and listen effectively and respectfully with supervisors, customers, and employees of the College
  • Maintain an appropriate image and dress
  • Establish and maintain a high level of customer service

Requirements

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • One year retail experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computers
  • Experience operating cash registers and handling money
  • Ability to read and interpret postal documents, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide
  • Ability to count money and make change appropriately
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form
  • Valid driver's license
