About the position

The Applied Material Division (AMD) at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral appointee to focus on process optimization and research and development of electrochemical separation technologies. The role involves conducting bench-scale process optimization and assisting in pilot-scale demonstrations aimed at waste-to-energy and industrial decarbonization. The appointee will collaborate with industrial partners on projects related to organic acid recovery, waste nutrient recovery, and CO2 capture, while also engaging in material research and process modeling to enhance separation performance.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct bench-scale process optimization of electrochemical membrane separation technologies.
  • Assist in pilot-scale field demonstrations of separation technologies applied to organic acid recovery, waste nutrient recovery, and CO2 capture.
  • Select, characterize, or fabricate separation materials as needed for research.
  • Collaborate with other team members to develop innovative chemical and bioprocessing technologies.
  • Model and improve separation performance in real-world environments.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Chemical, Environmental, Electrochemical, Mechanical, Material Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • 0-1 year of relevant experience or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in designing and conducting membrane separation experiments.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and define project objectives and scientific/technical approaches.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including proposal and report preparation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Background knowledge in electrochemical processes and separation.
  • Experience with field demonstration.
