About the position

The Applied Material Division (AMD) at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral appointee to focus on process optimization and research and development of electrochemical separation technologies. This role aims to enable waste-to-energy solutions and contribute to industrial decarbonization efforts. The appointee will engage in bench-scale process optimization and assist in pilot-scale demonstrations, collaborating with industrial partners in various sectors including fuel and chemical production, CO2 management, and organic waste treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct bench-scale process optimization of electrochemical membrane separation technologies.
  • Assist in pilot-scale field demonstrations for organic acid recovery, waste nutrient recovery, and CO2 capture.
  • Perform material research and process modeling to enhance separation performance.
  • Select, characterize, and fabricate separation materials as needed.
  • Coordinate research efforts with other team members to develop innovative chemical and bioprocessing technologies.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Chemical, Environmental, Electrochemical, Mechanical, Material Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • 0-1 year of experience or equivalent in relevant fields.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in designing and conducting membrane separation experiments.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and define project objectives and scientific/technical approaches.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including proposal and report preparation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Background knowledge in electrochemical processes and separation.
  • Experience with field demonstrations.
