About the position

The Materials Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral appointee to investigate ion transport in polymer electrolyte materials. This role involves collaboration with experimentalists and researchers in polymer synthesis, x-ray scattering, molecular modeling, and machine learning. The appointee will conduct experiments on ion conductivity, fabricate testing platforms, and characterize the microstructure of hydrated polymer electrolytes to establish relationships between structure, hydration, and ionic conductivity.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate ion transport as a function of material structure and hydration in polymer electrolyte materials.
  • Collaborate with experimentalists engaged in polymer synthesis and x-ray scattering.
  • Work with researchers performing molecular modeling and machine learning activities.
  • Perform ion conductivity experiments with thin film polymer electrolytes.
  • Use lithography to fabricate new testing platforms for measuring hydroxide ion conductivity.
  • Make water uptake measurements and characterize the microstructure of hydrated polymer electrolytes.
  • Present research at technical meetings and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in materials science and engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, or a closely related discipline, received within the last 5 years or upcoming year.
  • Laboratory experience in organic materials characterization and electrochemistry.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other personnel on the project and within the division.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with machine learning techniques in materials science.
  • Familiarity with polymer synthesis methods.
