About the position

The Postdoctoral Associate in Comparative Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine is a training position designed for graduate veterinary applicants. The role involves providing care for research animals, conducting independent research, and acquiring necessary training for certification in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. The position requires collaboration with a multi-disciplinary veterinary team and regulatory oversight responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessment and treatment plans for protocol-related and spontaneous diseases in rodent and non-rodent species.
  • Complete surgical training of investigators, anesthesia monitoring, and post-operative care.
  • Conduct preventative care and health surveillance for research animals.
  • Train at off-site primate clinical rotations at Charles River and Bastrop primate facilities.
  • Identify a research lab and perform an independent research project resulting in a first author publication.
  • Assist with and perform other research projects as time permits.
  • Participate and give lectures in weekly resident seminar series on ACLAM boards material.
  • Serve on the IACUC as an alternate member and perform protocol reviews, facility and lab inspections, and semiannual program evaluations.
  • Participate in AAALAC site visits and other regulatory inspections as they occur.

Requirements

  • MD or Ph.D. in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.

Nice-to-haves

  • Doctor of veterinary medicine, licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state.
  • Eligible to obtain veterinary license in Texas.
  • Ability to take rotating on-call schedule for emergency and after-hours clinical coverage.
