About the position

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a candidate with expertise in physical metallurgy, particularly in ferrous metals and magnetic materials, to contribute to advanced manufacturing technologies. The role involves applying principles of physical metallurgy to research on ferrous metal components fabricated via additive manufacturing (AM). The candidate will collaborate with a diverse team of researchers and industry partners, focusing on process-microstructure-property relationships and engaging in proposal writing and publishing high-impact research papers.

Responsibilities

  • Develop processing science of ferrous alloys within a team of scientists.
  • Optimize process conditions to produce high-performance materials and relate material performance to microstructure using advanced characterization techniques.
  • Explore new research directions in ferrous alloy processing for industrial applications.
  • Interact with industrial partners and research organizations regarding advanced manufacturing technologies.
  • Present and report research results and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Promote a culture of innovation, engagement, and safety based on ORNL core values.
  • Set priorities, multi-task, and adapt to changing needs in a dynamic environment.
  • Work autonomously while participating creatively in a collaborative team environment.

Requirements

  • PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or related discipline completed within the last five years.
  • Strong background in physical metallurgy of ferrous metals, electrical steels, and magnetic materials.
  • Experience with characterization tools for understanding structure-property relationships of ferrous metals and magnetic materials.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, capable of engaging with an international scientific audience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with shape memory alloys and high-temperature alloys through additive manufacturing.
  • A record of productive research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
