About the position

The Geochemistry and Interfacial Sciences (GIS) Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to conduct experimental research on solid-liquid interfaces, focusing on mineral nucleation and growth from aqueous solutions and interactions with carbon dioxide. The role involves performing experiments with in situ observations and analyzing results using various advanced techniques.

Responsibilities

• Conduct independent research using experimental techniques and multi-modal microscopy characterization.
• Perform mineral nucleation, growth, and carbonation experiments.
• Collaborate with ORNL researchers on the design and execution of microscopy and X-ray/neutron scattering experiments and subsequent characterization.
• Present and report research results and publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals.

Requirements

• A PhD in Physical Sciences, such as Geology, Geochemistry, Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related disciplines completed within the last 5 years.
• Experience in wet chemistry.
• Background in analytical or microscopy techniques (e.g., atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy).

• Excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
• Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
