About the position

The Bay Area Environmental Research Institute is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Scientist for the ICEE Facility at NASA Ames Research Center. This role involves conducting laboratory and theoretical research focused on understanding the effects of radiation on interstellar and planetary analog ices and materials. The position aims to provide insights into the production and diagenesis of potential organic biomarkers and to enhance astrophysical and planetary models through experimental data and analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct laboratory experiments using High Vacuum chambers, cryogenic coolers, and radiation sources.
  • Monitor changes in materials using FTIR, Raman, and Mass spectroscopies.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.
  • Assist in the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, including housekeeping, supply inventory, and hazardous waste management.
  • Attend project meetings biweekly or monthly, and weekly tag-up meetings.

Requirements

  • Experience with Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) chambers and cryogenic systems.
  • Proficiency in using radiation sources such as UV, X-ray, and electron beams.
  • Familiarity with FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, and Mass spectrometry techniques.
  • Ability to reduce and interpret spectral data from analytical instruments.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills for scientific publication.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience designing and building UHV experimental systems.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and Python programming.
