About the position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Postdoctoral Scholar, Computational Genomics [R0145134]. We are seeking a motivated postdoctoral scholar to join our growing team in the Zhivagui Lab. Our lab uses computational and experimental methods to determine mechanism-based biomarkers for exposure and risk stratification to advance the understanding of cancer causation and tumorigenesis. The Zhivagui Lab focuses on cancer genomics for cancer prevention. The incumbent will provide computational and bioinformatic support for projects investigating genomic and epigenomic alterations linked to cancer mechanisms, with a focus on biomarker discovery and validation. We are specifically looking for a postdoc to spearhead computational projects at the intersection of human genomics and experimental modelling, who will apply and develop new approaches for analyzing variants and their role in cancer.

Responsibilities

  • Use bioinformatic tools to analyze large-scale genomics datasets
  • Develop and apply methods for analyzing genomic variations, e.g. SNV, SNP, SV, CNV, methylation, and gene expression
  • Develop tools using machine learning and AI
  • Prepare high-impact manuscripts for publication and conference presentations
  • Attend and present at lab meetings, journal clubs, and departmental seminars
  • Contribute to the mentoring of students and junior scientists in the lab
  • Assist in the preparation of grant proposals
  • Maintain code and pipelines, and support lab operations as needed
  • Positively contribute to lab culture

Requirements

  • Doctorate degree, PhD, MD, or MD/PhD from an accredited college or university
  • Experience with programming languages and the command line interface
  • Experience with large-scale genomic analyses, variant calling, cloud computing, machine learning methods, and/or statistical genetics

Nice-to-haves

  • High level of drive and initiative, and track record of impactful research outcomes
  • Experience writing manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Eagerness to learn and establish new methods, and good problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Desire to contribute to the mentorship of students and junior scientists in the lab
  • Experience in, or strong understanding of, human genetics research
