About the position

The University of Washington, in collaboration with the NOAA Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC), is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar in Statistical Modeling to develop and apply statistical methods for analyzing environmental DNA (eDNA) data. This role focuses on quantitative conservation and fisheries applications, utilizing a large dataset of eDNA samples to understand marine resource distribution and abundance. The position emphasizes collaboration with researchers and aims to extend existing projects or explore new applications of eDNA data.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with scientists at UW, NOAA, and elsewhere to develop novel projects using eDNA to understand marine ecological dynamics relevant to fisheries.
  • Develop statistical methods to combine information from eDNA with traditional survey data.
  • Write and communicate results to interested audiences via publications and presentations.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Ecology, Fisheries Science, Quantitative Ecology, Applied Statistics, or a related field at the time of appointment.
  • Proficiency in R, Python, or an equivalent programming language.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of or experience with Stan or related probabilistic programming languages.
  • Experience with GitHub for project collaboration.
  • Familiarity with using Markdown or other software to support reproducible workflows.
