About the position

The PostgreSQL Database Administrator role is a contract position focused on managing and maintaining AWS Aurora/PostgreSQL database servers. The ideal candidate will work in a hybrid environment, collaborating with internal customers to deliver enterprise-level database solutions while ensuring data assurance and performance optimization. This position requires a strong background in AWS and on-premise systems administration, as well as proficiency in automation tools like Terraform and Ansible.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain AWS Aurora/PostgreSQL database servers in all environments.
  • Optimize database performance through tuning.
  • Develop monitoring and alerting architectures focused on incident reduction strategies.
  • Design and implement redundancy and failover strategies.
  • Establish backup and restoration strategies in accordance with data retention requirements.
  • Support software upgrades and patching.
  • Mentor team members to develop expertise in AWS Aurora/PostgreSQL and cloud technologies.
  • Provide insights to team leadership regarding best practices.
  • Diagnose and resolve production issues as part of an on-call rotation.
  • Remain open to learning and supporting new database and AWS technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience in AWS and on-premise systems administration.
  • Proficiency in performance tuning and Linux server administration.
  • Development experience with modern scripting/automation languages (e.g., Terraform, Ansible, Python).
  • Experience with database performance tuning, scaling, clustering, and troubleshooting concepts.
  • Strong collaboration skills and experience working across multiple teams within a division and enterprise-wide.
  • Ability to quickly learn new database technologies supported by the team.
  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, facilitation, and prioritization skills.
  • Strong technical acumen, ensuring that technical solutions, strategies, practices, and governance deliver business and customer value.
  • Self-motivated and proactive in improving the team environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of AWS networking concepts such as VPN, Security Groups, and Subnets.
  • Familiarity with troubleshooting in AWS CloudWatch, CloudTrail, and Performance Insights.
  • Preferred experience with DPA, Etcd, HAProxy, Patroni, and pgBackRest.
  • AWS Cloud Practitioner and Certified Database certifications are a plus.
