Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer serving Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington D.C., is seeking an Application Engineer for our Power Systems Division. This role is pivotal in assisting consulting engineers and contractors in the design of complex power system facilities and equipment, particularly focusing on power quality equipment. The PSD Application Engineer will work under the guidance of a Senior Application Engineer, specializing in diesel and gas-fueled electric power systems for both emergency and prime power applications. This includes working with switchgear, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), combined heat and power (CHP) systems, and other auxiliary systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing power needs to ensure that electrical loading and sizing parameters are accurately defined. This involves performing critical calculations for sizing generators, UPS devices, circuit breakers, cables, and disconnects. We are looking for candidates with a minimum of 10 years of experience in electrical power systems, and a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering is preferred. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who can work with limited supervision, develop objectives, set priorities, and implement ideas in a timely manner. They must possess the ability to articulate technology and product positioning to both business and technical users, maintain a good level of product knowledge and market trends, and define problems while collecting data to establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Additionally, the candidate should be able to prepare and read drawings for construction and equipment installation, write and modify specifications, and interpret contract documents. Proven ability to understand and meet complex customer needs through the preparation of proposals and other documentation is essential, as is the ability to effectively train new engineers. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required, along with a willingness to travel and work the hours necessary for the job.
