About the position

The Power Systems Electrician Floater position at Steel Dynamics Inc. involves performing essential electrical and electronic repairs and periodic maintenance on various equipment. This role is critical in ensuring the operational efficiency of electrical devices in Water Treatment, Power Distribution, and Facility areas outside of the mill. The electrician will be responsible for hands-on maintenance and repair tasks, which include optimizing drive control systems, PLC control systems, and other closed-loop industrial controls. In this position, the electrician will utilize their knowledge of high and low voltage electrical systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, breakers, power distribution systems, motors, motor control equipment, instrumentation, PLCs, and AC/DC drives. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying, designing, and implementing changes or upgrades that will enhance productivity and reliability within the electrical systems. Candidates should possess a strong aptitude for learning, as they will receive training in more complex skills such as PLC programming and drive systems, contingent upon demonstrating theoretical knowledge and a strong work ethic. A solid understanding of mathematics, particularly geometry and trigonometry, is also essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hands-on electrical and electronic repair and periodic maintenance on equipment.
  • Maintain and repair all electrical devices in Water Treatment, Power Distribution, and Facility areas outside of the mill.
  • Repair and optimize drive control systems, PLC control systems, and other closed-loop industrial controls.
  • Identify, design, and implement changes/upgrades to increase productivity or reliability of electrical systems.
  • Utilize knowledge of high and low voltage electrical systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, breakers, and power distribution systems.
  • Work with motors, motor control equipment, instrumentation, PLCs, and AC/DC drives.

Requirements

  • Safety oriented with a strong focus on teamwork.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Strong willingness to learn and adapt to new skills.
  • Industrial electrical training and/or 2 years of relevant experience is necessary.
  • Willingness to work scheduled and non-scheduled overtime is essential.
  • Ability to work without direct supervision and manage multiple tasks effectively.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least a 2-year Electrical degree and experience in an industrial setting.
