About the position

The Practical Nurse (Dialysis LPN) position within the Department of Justice is a critical role that involves providing comprehensive nursing care to chronically ill dialysis inmates. The role requires adherence to the Nurse Practice Act and Bureau of Prisons regulations, ensuring that all nursing activities are performed within the defined scope of practice. In addition to patient care responsibilities, the Practical Nurse must also maintain the security of the correctional institution, as this is a fundamental aspect of the role. The incumbent will be expected to perform a variety of nursing duties, including transcribing and executing physician's orders, observing and documenting changes in patients' conditions, and providing reassurance and support to patients, particularly those with mental health issues. The position demands a high level of professionalism and the ability to work effectively in a correctional environment, where the safety and security of both staff and inmates are paramount. Candidates must possess a current LPN license and have at least one year of nursing experience that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in Federal service. Responsibilities

  • Provide a full range of patient care to chronically ill dialysis inmates under supervision.
  • Prepare patients for specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures according to standard protocols.
  • Maintain records of medications given and report adverse reactions through approved mechanisms.
  • Transcribe and carry out a variety of physician's orders according to established nursing policies.
  • Maintain security of the correctional institution as a primary responsibility.
  • Observe, record, and report changes in patients' physical and emotional conditions.
  • Assist in operating room activities, including maintaining sterile conditions and positioning patients.

Requirements

  • Must be currently licensed to practice as a practical or vocational nurse in a state or territory of the U.S.
  • At least one year of nursing experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in Federal service.
  • Experience in providing pre-and post-operative patient care and observing changes in behavior of mentally ill patients.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.

Nice-to-haves
