About the position

First Church Academy for Young Children is seeking a part-time PreK 4/5 Teacher to join their NAEYC Accredited program in West Hartford, CT. The role focuses on providing a nurturing and supportive learning environment for children aged 4 to 5 years, emphasizing play-based learning. The Academy is committed to serving families from all faith backgrounds and does not include religious education in its curriculum. This position offers mentorship opportunities for new teachers and aims to foster the growth of the whole child.

Responsibilities

  • Meet the children’s individual needs in all areas: physical, emotional, social, and intellectual according to their appropriate developmental level.
  • Assist in the development of weekly lesson plans and implement these plans flexibly.
  • Practice positive discipline techniques in guiding children’s behavior according to the Academy’s Positive Guidance Plan.
  • Engage and communicate constructively with individual children during activities and routines.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, inviting, and stimulating room arrangement that acknowledges individual development and current interests.
  • Assist in child and group observations and daily record keeping for the classroom.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation for each child, including accident/incident reports and daily notes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Education Director.
  • Be sensitive and responsive to parents and act as a resource to them.
  • Keep child and family information confidential for classroom use only.
  • Attend all staff meetings and maintain open communication with co-workers.
  • Establish a program for one’s own growth and development and acquire the required annual professional development hours.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least one year of experience working with infants/toddlers or preschool-aged children, preferably in an organized program.
  • Child Development Associate (CDA) or Associate’s Degree in early childhood education is highly preferred.
  • Ability to relate joyfully and sensitively to children.
  • Understanding and acceptance of the individual developmental stages of young children.
  • Evidence of emotional maturity and stability, with the confidence and judgment to handle crisis situations.
  • Dependable and punctual.
  • Must meet all state licensing requirements, including fingerprinting for a background check and a medical statement indicating good health.
