About the position

At Appian, we are seeking a Pre-Sales Engineer to join our Public Sector, DoD Capture team. This role is pivotal in engaging with our partners and customers during the pre-sales phase to develop demos and applications that showcase the value of the Appian platform. The Pre-Sales Engineer will be responsible for leading projects throughout the entire capture process, which includes defining, designing, developing, and implementing custom applications using Appian's low-code platform specifically for our Defense opportunities. This position requires a deep understanding of our clients' business processes and technical needs, as well as the ability to launch new relational data models in production and develop APIs for integration with multiple systems. In this role, you will work within an agile environment, collaborating closely with clients' technical teams and business users throughout the project life cycle. You will drive the development of applications on the Appian Platform, ensuring that they meet the specific needs of our customers. A key aspect of this position is mentoring and leading small teams through the pre-sale demonstration and application development process, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement. To excel in this position, you will need a passion for technology and problem-solving, excellent communication skills, and a history of success in cross-functional teams. You should have experience building products using agile methodologies, a good understanding of object-oriented programming, and experience with relational databases and SQL. Familiarity with low-code application development platforms, particularly the Appian Platform, is essential. Additionally, knowledge of software testing practices and experience with integrations using APIs will be beneficial. This role also requires the ability to maintain an Active TS Clearance (CI or FLS) and a willingness to travel up to 10% annually to support customer engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with partners and customers during the pre-sales phase to develop demos and applications.
  • Lead projects throughout the entire capture process for Defense opportunities.
  • Define, design, develop, and implement custom applications using Appian's low-code platform.
  • Collaborate with clients' technical teams and business users throughout the project life cycle.
  • Drive the development of applications on the Appian Platform.
  • Mentor and lead small teams through the pre-sale demonstration and application development process.
  • Work within an agile environment to understand clients' business processes and technical needs.
  • Launch new relational data models in production and develop APIs for integration with multiple systems.

Requirements

  • Passion for mentoring and developing others with experience leading small teams.
  • Ability to work with clients to define business processes and gather functional and technical system requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills and a passion for technology and continuous learning.
  • Experience building products using agile methodologies (pair programming, stand-ups, planning sessions, and sprints).
  • Good understanding of object-oriented programming and experience with relational databases and database design/data modeling.
  • SQL skills including writing queries, joins, views, etc.
  • Experience working with low-code application development platforms, particularly the Appian Platform.
  • Knowledge of software testing practices (test-driven development, automated test suites within a continuous integration framework).
  • Experience with integrations using APIs such as REST and SOAP, JDBC connections, and web services.
  • Familiarity with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Analytics, Machine Learning, Google Cloud, Application Integration, Database, Developer Tools, Management & Governance, and Elastic Containers.

Nice-to-haves

  • B.S./B.A. in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics or related field/degree.
