About the position

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is seeking a skilled Welder Fabricator to join our Pullman, WA based Machining and Fabrication team. This position is open to Welder Fabricators of all experience levels, with the job title determined by the applicant's experience level. As a Welder Fabricator, you will be responsible for programming, setting up, and operating both CNC and manually operated fabrication equipment to produce and inspect a wide variety of sheet metal and other custom components. Welding is a critical aspect of this role, and we are specifically looking for experienced welders proficient in MIG and TIG welding processes. The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of welding theory, as well as a basic understanding of welding metallurgy and nondestructive testing processes. Experience with materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel, and titanium is preferred. In addition to technical skills, we are looking for someone who embodies SEL values as outlined in our Principles of Operation. The ideal candidate will be an excellent problem solver, self-driven to improve in their craft, and willing to learn and teach a broad range of welding and fabrication skills and technologies. Positions are available for both day and swing shifts. A typical day for a Welder Fabricator may include using manual and CNC machining or fabrication equipment to produce parts of moderate complexity under limited supervision, performing preventive maintenance on shop equipment, creating basic to moderate CNC programs with a CAD/CAM system, providing design feedback and training to engineering and other staff on basic to moderate design projects, and adhering to all shop safety procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Program, set up, and operate CNC and manually operated fabrication equipment.
  • Produce and inspect a wide variety of sheet metal and custom components.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on shop equipment.
  • Create basic to moderate CNC programs using CAD/CAM systems.
  • Provide design feedback and training to engineering and other staff on design projects.
  • Adhere to all shop safety procedures.

Requirements

  • Two years of trade school or equivalent experience.
  • Four years of welder fabricator experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret moderate to complex blueprints.
  • Knowledge of welding theory and industry standards.
  • Ability to create basic CAD/CAM programs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel, and titanium.
  • Proficiency in MIG and TIG welding processes.
  • Understanding of welding metallurgy and nondestructive testing processes.
