About the position

The Preowned Sales Director at Berkshire Hathaway Automotive is a pivotal role within the dealership, responsible for overseeing the Used Sales Department's operations. This position requires a strategic approach to planning, executing, organizing, and controlling activities to meet the dealership's performance standards, including gross profit, sales volume, and customer satisfaction metrics. The Preowned Sales Director will work closely with the General Manager to ensure that the department aligns with the dealership's overall goals and objectives. In this high-volume, fast-paced environment, the Preowned Sales Director will be tasked with developing strong relationships with both employees and customers, addressing any disconnects in the sales process. This role involves hiring, training, and motivating the sales management staff, conducting regular meetings to review operations, and fostering a culture of performance and accountability. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of managing pre-owned inventory effectively, ensuring clean inventory management, and driving consistent sales growth. The Preowned Sales Director will also be responsible for maintaining the dealership's website, ensuring that all specials are updated and compliant, and reviewing departmental expenses. Additionally, the role includes assisting in the development of advertising campaigns and promotions to support the pre-owned department, attending manager meetings, and staying informed about current market trends and vehicle valuations. The Director will lead the used car sales team, develop strategies for inventory optimization, and ensure compliance with regulations and company policies, all while building a strong customer referral network.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with employees and customers to develop relationships and bridge disconnects in the sales process
  • Hire, train, motivate, counsel, and develop the sales management staff
  • Conduct regular staff meetings to review operations and communicate effectively
  • Develop future managers through job growth and performance evaluations; serve as a role model
  • Maintain lot control and ensure website compliance with updated specials and pricing
  • Review and control departmental expenses
  • Assist in developing advertising campaigns and promotions for the pre-owned department
  • Attend and contribute to manager meetings
  • Stay informed about current market trends and vehicle valuations
  • Conduct sales meetings to motivate and train sales professionals
  • Adhere to high ethical standards while maintaining gross profit and customer satisfaction
  • Manage and lead the used car sales team to meet and exceed sales targets
  • Develop and execute strategies to optimize inventory, pricing, and merchandising
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and company policies
  • Collaborate with other departments to drive overall business success
  • Build rapport with customers to establish a referral network
  • Manage all other aspects and day-to-day operations of the department

Requirements

  • 24+ months experience running and operating a pre-owned department in a high-volume car dealership
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Familiarity and experience using an Inventory Tool, VAuto preferred
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate, present, and influence effectively at all levels
  • Sales and trend forecasting abilities
  • Proven ability to drive the sales process from plan to close
  • Strong business sense and industry expertise
  • Excellent mentoring, coaching, and people management skills
