About the position

The Preschool Assistant Teacher at Lakeland Hills Family YMCA plays a crucial role in the Childcare Program under the guidance of the director. This part-time position involves working with children aged 2 to 5 years, assisting the head teacher and coworkers in implementing daily curriculum and maintaining a safe and engaging environment. The assistant teacher is responsible for building positive relationships with both children and parents, ensuring the health and safety of each participant, and contributing to the overall success of the program. The role requires flexibility in scheduling, with various shifts available throughout the week, including mornings and afternoons. In this position, the assistant teacher will be accountable for the health and safety of each child, which includes administering minor first aid, following emergency medical procedures, and monitoring authorized pickups. The assistant will also assist in planning and implementing daily activities tailored to the individual needs of the assigned class, while keeping written records of incidents and maintaining communication with the director. Building positive relationships with children involves teaching them essential social skills, encouraging their self-esteem, and helping them navigate their emotions. Additionally, the assistant teacher will engage with parents, valuing their input and keeping them informed about their child's progress and any concerns. The physical demands of the job include standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and engaging in various physical activities with the children. The assistant teacher must also be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to ensure a high-quality program and a positive experience for all participants. Responsibilities

  • Assist head teacher and coworkers with the implementation of daily curriculum and room maintenance.
  • Build positive relationships with children and parents.
  • Be accountable for the health and safety of each participant.
  • Administer minor first aid and follow emergency medical procedures.
  • Monitor authorized pickups and ensure safety during activities.
  • Help manage the daily schedule and plan activities for the assigned class.
  • Keep written communication in the journal provided and maintain records of incidents.
  • Teach children sharing, caring, and mutual respect.
  • Encourage and guide children while helping them maintain a positive self-image.
  • Listen to and talk with children, helping them deal with their feelings.
  • Welcome parents as visitors and discuss any serious issues with the director before approaching them.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least one year of experience working with children.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Interest in the development of Infant/Toddler and Pre-school children.
  • CPR Certification preferred.
  • Child Development Associate Certification preferred.
