About the position
This term position is located in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area within the Science and Resource Management Division. The role focuses on assisting higher-graded preservation staff in completing historic preservation work associated with funded projects, including cyclic maintenance and recreation fee projects that involve the preservation and stabilization of historic and prehistoric structures. The position is expected to last at least 13 months, with the possibility of extension up to four years.
Responsibilities
- Use and maintain hand and power masonry tools for cutting and shaping stone and masonry work.
- Reconstruct, restore, or rehabilitate wood structures.
- Assist higher graded journeymen in repairing and reconstructing masonry structures.
- Inspect historic structures/sites to determine maintenance needs.
- Read and interpret building plans, specifications, and blueprints.
- Select appropriate materials to match historic fabric in color, texture, and composition.
Requirements
- Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
- Ability to interpret instructions and specifications, including blueprints.
- Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment effectively.
- Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
- Knowledge of materials and technical practices related to construction.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience in carpentry, masonry, roofing, and painting tasks.
- Experience in restoration of historic properties.
- Ability to read construction documents for restoration projects.
