About the position

The Primary Care Surgery and Clinic Nurse at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine plays a crucial role in supporting surgical and clinical operations within a busy veterinary clinic. This position involves assisting in surgical procedures, monitoring anesthesia, and providing nursing care to patients while also educating veterinary students in essential clinical skills. The role emphasizes teamwork, adaptability, and a commitment to patient safety and comfort.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining smooth surgical flow for a busy clinic with an average of 15 patients per day.
  • Monitor anesthesia with a clear understanding of normal and abnormal conditions, ensuring patient safety and comfort.
  • Utilize strong venipuncture skills to facilitate blood draws and IV catheter placements.
  • Ensure prompt and accurate completion of paperwork and maintenance of patient records.
  • Be familiar with animal behavior, including signs of fear and stress, and practice fear-free handling techniques.
  • Work collaboratively with the Primary Care Surgeon, Nurse Coordinator, and students to provide optimal care.
  • Identify personal limitations and seek help as needed, demonstrating a willingness to learn and adapt.
  • Respond appropriately and effectively during emergencies, ensuring the safety and well-being of patients.
  • Instruct and assist 4th year veterinary students on proper restraint techniques and nursing skills such as venipuncture, cystocentesis, and vaccine/subcutaneous medication administration.
  • Manage prescription refill requests and notify clients of the status of the prescription.

Requirements

  • Must be a CVT/LVT/RVT with 3 years' experience in general practice with anesthesia.
  • Prior experience in a veterinary clinic or surgical setting is preferred.
  • Strong multitasking abilities, excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Positive and motivating demeanor, with a commitment to working well in a fast-paced environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • HQHVSN experience is a plus.
