About the position

The Primate Keeper II position at Nashville Zoo involves providing care and enrichment for primates and other mammals under the supervision of the Primate Area Supervisor and Mammal Curator. The role includes maintaining animal habitats, observing animal behavior, and assisting with veterinary procedures, all while ensuring safety and compliance with zoo policies. This full-time position requires flexibility in scheduling, including weekends, and involves outdoor work in various weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Provides care for animals including preparing diets, feeding, and cleaning habitats.
  • Performs daily observations of animals to identify normal and abnormal behaviors related to husbandry and health issues.
  • Coordinates with senior staff on animal training programs to facilitate husbandry behaviors.
  • Communicates medical or health concerns regarding animals to the supervisor.
  • Assists with treatment and administers medication as directed.
  • Provides behavioral and psychological enrichment for animals.
  • Communicates with visitors for educational and safety purposes.
  • Disposes of trash and debris in the zoo and maintains landscaping around habitats.
  • Services and maintains tools, equipment, and facilities for safe use.
  • Follows all safety rules and regulations, attending regular safety meetings.
  • Assists with training for new keepers or seasonal staff as assigned.
  • Documents observations on animal health, behavior, diet, enrichment, and facilities for department records.
  • Assists with veterinary procedures as needed and performs basic health care procedures.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of full-time, paid exotic animal experience, with at least 1 year of primate intensive experience.
  • Experience in an AZA accredited zoo is preferred.
  • College degree (Associates or Bachelors) in Animal Science, Biology, Zoology, or a related field, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with animal diet preparation and general biology.
  • Knowledge of maintenance methods and materials.
