About the position

The Principal Civil Engineer (Substation Standards and Materials) at Consumers Energy is responsible for the development and maintenance of electric substation standards, specifications, and materials. This role involves overseeing the design, planning, and construction of infrastructure projects, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget. The engineer will work on various structures, including buildings and pipelines, and will be a key point of contact for project stakeholders, providing guidance and ensuring compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain electric substation civil/structural standard drawings and specifications.
  • Design and review substation foundations and structural steel to maintain standards.
  • Consult with project stakeholders regarding engineering requirements for construction.
  • Use design software to accurately render and communicate designs.
  • Prepare feasibility studies, reports, designs, calculations, and cost estimates.
  • Assess the strength of materials and soil for safe modifications/building.
  • Perform fieldwork and data collection as necessary, including soil testing and surveying.
  • Set design specifications by computing load and grade requirements and material stress factors.
  • Plan projects based on analysis of relevant materials and data.
  • Estimate materials, equipment, and labor needed for project costs.
  • Prepare proposals, reports, specifications, and other deliverables as required.
  • Draft and present reports on environmental impact and compliance with codes and regulations.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure project progress.
  • Monitor project progress and ensure compliance with design specifications and safety standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with seven (7) or more years of applicable engineering experience.
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with seven (7) or more years of applicable engineering experience.
  • Thorough understanding of civil engineering principles, practices, and tools.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or similar software.
  • Understanding of materials, methods, and tools involved in construction or repair of structures.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations related to assigned projects.
  • Ability to identify and solve complex problems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented and accurate.
